A PLUMTREE businessman has donated school furniture to Gwambe Secondary School in Bulilima District to enhance pupils’ learning. Bulilima Rural District Council chief executive officer, John Brown Ncube said the school received benches for two classes from Mkhulunyelwa Nkomo who runs Mainline Butchery. “Gwambe Secondary is still under construction and pupils have their lessons while sitting on the floor. One of our local business individuals donated benches for two classes,” he said.

“As a local authority we have mobilised material for constructing desks, which will accompany these benches. We appreciate this donation as it will make life easier for pupils who were sitting on the floor and even for teachers who had to share furniture with pupils.”

He said most pupils in resettlement areas within the district were learning from improper structures.
“Children living in resettlement areas are at a great disadvantage. Policy does not allow proper schools to be constructed in their areas because of their low population figures. As a result old farm houses and abandoned huts have been turned into schools while in other cases they completely do not have schools,” Ncube said.

He said in Fairview, Peace and Good Hope Primary schools pupils were learning from abandoned huts.
“These schools have as few as 20 to 30 children and even though pupils found in each resettlement area are put together, they cannot form a proper school as pupils have to reach a certain number to have a registered school constructed for them,” said Ncube.

He said council was making efforts to have schools built in resettlement areas and was in discussion with the Ministries of Lands and Primary and Secondary Education to develop proper schools.

“We have realised that we have been condemning those children from accessing proper schools and we hope that a school can be constructed in each resettlement area,” said Ncube.
