A 59-year-old businessman last week lost a Toyota Hilux and $1 000 cash to six armed robbers who waylaid him at the entrance to his house in Nkayi, forced him to drive to his shop and robbed him of his car and cash.
The businessman had parked at a gate to his house, waiting for his employees to open it, when the gang pounced. Chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said the police were investigating. She said the man, who was on his way from his shops in Inyathi, arrived at his house and parked at the gate waiting for his employees to open it.
“Six male adults armed with an unidentified rifle and knives emerged from the darkness and threatened to kill the complainant,” said Snr Asst Comm Charamba. “They demanded cash which he did not have in person. The culprits then escorted the victim to his shop where they stole $1 000 and two Nokia cellphones.”
The robbers then tied the victim with shoelaces in his shop and drove away his vehicle. “Police are urging businesspeople to avoid keeping large sums of money as they risk being tracked down by criminals. Anyone with information which may lead to the arrest of the culprits to contact any nearest Police Station or phone the National Complaints Desk on (04) 703631,” Snr Asst Comm Charamba said.
