RENOWNED Bulawayo businessman Mohammed Hassen Esat, who died at the age of 80 following complications from a stroke, has been described by his family as a humble, loving and selfless father and grandfather whose generosity touched countless lives.

Speaking at the family home at 51B Pauling Street Suburbs in Bulawayo yesterday evening, family spokesperson Mr Hassen Mohammed Esat said the late businessman would be laid to rest this afternoon at Athlone Cemetery.

Mr Hassen revealed that his father was affectionately nicknamed “Mr Chronicle” because of his unwavering love for The Chronicle, which he read faithfully every day.

“We are saddened as a family by this loss, but at the same time we are celebrating a life well lived. My father suffered a minor stroke a few weeks ago but managed to recover. Unfortunately, he later suffered a brain haemorrhage. We rushed him to hospital and within 30 minutes he was gone,” he said.

“Our father was a fighter. That is why he was involved in the liberation struggle. When others left, he remained behind and continued supporting the struggle. He lived as a fighter and he died a fighter,” said Mr Hassen.

As a Chronicle news crew arrived at the family residence, mourners continued to stream in to offer condolences, reflecting the high esteem in which the late businessman was held across Bulawayo.

Among the first civic leaders to visit the bereaved family was proportional representation councillor Perseverance Nyathi, who described the late Mr Esat as a man who transcended social, racial and political boundaries through his kindness.

“He never cared about one’s background. He was always willing to assist financially, morally or even spiritually. That was the kind of man he was. His generosity and compassion impacted many people, and his passing is a great loss not only to his family but to the wider Bulawayo community,” said Cllr Nyathi.

Esat is remembered as a respected businessman, community philanthropist and patriot whose legacy of humility, generosity and service will continue to inspire generations.
