A HARARE businessman, George Tarisai Marume, has been ordered to restitute US$16 000 after he was convicted of conspiracy to commit robbery.
Marume was on Friday last week convicted after a full trial by Harare regional magistrate Donald Ndirowei.
He was sentenced to four years imprisonment and two years were suspended on condition that he doesn’t commit a similar offence in the next five years.
The remaining two years were suspended on condition that he restitutes US$16 000 on or before 30 November.
The complainant was Steelmate Investment being represented by its Managing Director, Clive Chisenye.
Marume was responsible for all accounting activities as well as receiving and banking cash.
He would receive cash from the cashier, drivers as well as clients.
After receiving money, he would hand over the money to Chisenye at the end of the day and at the close of business, Chisenye would collect the money directly from Marume in his office.
The State represented by Tendai Tapi proved that on December 6 2023, Chisenye left his office early before close of business.
During cashing time, Marume phoned Chisenye inquiring on what he was supposed to do with the cash since he was not in the office.
Chisenye then advised Marume to drop the cash in the safe and carry the keys with him.
Marume and his accomplices, who are still at large then conspired to rob Steelmate Investment.
They broke into the office at around 3am on December 7 after they had manhandled the security guard, Peddington Mugumbate, who was on duty and threatened him with two firearms.
The robbers had knowledge of where the money was because Marume had told them.
