ZIMBABWE’S inaugural Mrs Universe representative, Atipa Busuman, is basking in the glory of an award-winning international debut after scooping two major accolades at the 49th Mrs Universe Grand Finale in Colombo, Sri Lanka, over the weekend.

Busuman, who finished ninth among 108 contestants, won the Mrs Social Cause and Best Native National Costume awards, with the latter recognising her culturally inspired creation, Hungwe Huru: Guardian of Zimbabwe’s Wonders, which showcased the country’s rich heritage, wildlife and natural attractions.

Her costume, Hungwe Huru: Guardian of Zimbabwe’s Wonders, was a celebration of the country’s cultural heritage, wildlife and natural attractions, bringing together symbols that reflect Zimbabwe’s identity and history.

Inspired by the Hungwe, or African fish eagle, the design drew on the bird’s association with the iconic Zimbabwe Bird, a national symbol of the country’s heritage. It also incorporated references to the ancient stone structures of Great Zimbabwe and Khami Ruins, as well as wildlife found in Hwange and Gonarezhou national parks.

The Zambezi River and Victoria Falls, also known as Mosi-oa-Tunya, featured in the design, showcasing Zimbabwe’s natural wonders. Cowrie shells and beads represented the country’s natural wealth, while feathers symbolised the strength and resilience of its people.

The costume was brought to life through a collaboration involving African creatives Jaspizy Welcome, African Fabric & Designs Kenya and Afro Aesthetics, blending cultural storytelling with fashion to present Zimbabwe’s heritage to an international audience.

For Busuman, the recognition went beyond the beauty of the costume, offering an opportunity to tell Zimbabwe’s story through its cultural symbols and landmarks.

“I am incredibly proud to have made history for my nation and also to draw attention to our beautiful continent! As Zimbabwe’s first representative in the Mrs Universe franchise and competition, securing a place in the Top 10 is truly a remarkable milestone,” she said.

Busuman thanked various members of her family and management teams that supported her in her journey to becoming the 9th runner up at the Mrs Universe Grand Finale, and ultimately writing her name into the history books of Zimbabwean pageantry.

“First and foremost, I give all glory and honour to Jehovah El-Roi, the God who sees me, who continues to guide my footsteps, open doors beyond my imagination and remind me that His plans for my life are greater than anything I could ever envision. Through every season, His grace has carried me, and this remarkable achievement is a testament to His faithfulness.

“My heartfelt gratitude goes to the Affluent & Influential Society, under the directorship of Sibonelo Khupe, and the rest of the team. Thank you for creating a platform for Zimbabwean women to shine on the world stage and advocate for meaningful causes.

“A special acknowledgement to the talented designers Ivhu Tribe ZW and African Fabrics and Designs Kenya, who brought my national costume, Hungwe Huru: The Guardian of Zimbabwe’s Wonders, to life inspired by my noble Nyoni clan and totem and the majestic African Fish Eagle, this masterpiece celebrated Zimbabwe’s rich heritage, iconic landmarks, wildlife and the resilience of our people. Winning the Best Native National Costume Award was another historic moment that made me incredibly proud to raise Zimbabwe’s flag.”

Busuman gave praise to members of her management team and family for the support they had given her over the years.

“To my Mrs Universe Zimbabwe management team, which is proudly a family affair, thank you! It truly takes a village. My Incredible Momager, my biggest cheerleader, who brought so much warmth and excitement to Colombo. My brother Kenny, aka Manager Brother, thank you for standing beside me and ensuring everything came together behind the scenes. To my lifelong mentor, Phillip Masuku of Clout Model Management, thank you for believing in me and guiding me since I was 14 years old. Look how far we’ve come! This is truly one for the books.”

She added that the achievement reflected the resilience, determination and potential of Zimbabwean women.

Busuman’s second award, Mrs Social Cause, recognised her advocacy work, particularly her efforts to raise awareness of gender-based violence and femicide.

Her presentation at a domestic violence awareness forum during the competition was well received, earning her the accolade and reinforcing the social advocacy component of her participation.

Through Threads of Strength, an initiative founded in Zimbabwe, Busuman seeks to empower women and young people through education, creativity and practical skills.

“This is only the beginning! This young woman from Zimbabwe still has so much more to offer our continent and the world. It’s her time to arise and shine,” she said.

“Beyond the crown, my commitment to advocacy in response to gender-based violence, and in particular femicide, continues through Threads of Strength, an initiative born in Zimbabwe to empower women and youth through education, creativity and practical skills.”

Reflecting on her ninth-place finish, Busuman described the moment as the culmination of months of preparation, sacrifice and determination.

“Walking that stage with Zimbabwe across my chest was an overwhelming feeling of pride, gratitude and purpose,” she said.

The 49th Mrs Universe 2026 title went to Isidora Rankovic, who represented Monaco.
