ZIMBABWEAN football striker Butho Phiri has returned home after a brief stint in Namibia’s Debmarine Premiership with Young African, where he recorded seven goal contributions, including three goals and four assists. His time in Namibia was marked by delays in securing his work permit, which limited his playing opportunities.
Phiri joined Young African for the 2023/2024 season following his debut in the Castle Lager Premiership in Zimbabwe in 2022 with Whawha FC.
Struggling in a foreign land ultimately led Phiri to make the difficult decision to come back, despite having other offers available. “Facing numerous challenges abroad compelled me to return home; the delay in obtaining my permit dampened my passion for the game,” he remarked upon his arrival.
The 24-year-old striker, who previously played in the Castle Lager Premiership, is now linked with Southern Region Division One side Talen Vision. The upcoming league season is expected to be highly competitive, as Phiri prepares to face teams like Bulawayo Chiefs, Hwange FC, and Arenel Movers, all of whom were relegated from the premiership last season. “I am ready to battle for top honors against the top teams in the Southern region, and I am looking forward to an exciting chapter in my career,” he stated.
Phiri expressed his relief at being back home, highlighting the support of his family and a more manageable environment as significant factors in his decision. “I am happy to be back, as there will be fewer challenges, and I will be closer to my family, where I can receive the support I need,” he added.
