Bybit Areketa honours Tobias

resurrect the memories of her father, a jazz maestro whose career was cut short by an untimely death by releasing a tributary album in his honour.
“It is something I have wished to do for 16 years and I have procrastinated doing this until December last year,” said the 26-year-old.
“Have done this now, and I don’t think I will ever sing again. This is my first and last album. I wanted to do this for my father and not to launch a musical career.”
After shillyshallying since she was 10, Bybit finally got her project running late last year.
The album would be launched tomorrow night at the Alexander Sports Club in Harare.
“I got help from my friend Ruvimbo Jakanane who has an understanding of the music sector. She linked me to Mono Mukundu who produced my album and the rest is history,” said Bybit.
Through Mono, came Andy Brown, Alexio Kawara, Victor Kunonga, Willis Watafi, Mannex Motsi, Dzikamai (of G56), Shazi band and Sadaz and Roki.
The whole team worked on the album that will reignite memories of the late Tobias Areketa.
It is one musical project that will remind many of the way Tobias fused his Afro Jazz with a Caribbean feel.
“I feel my dad was so talented and he passed on before people had seen half of what he was capable of.
Since his death, I have always wanted to rekindle the talent dad had and to re-ignite the passion that was once in and perhaps still lies idle in his fans,” said Bybit.
She said although she enjoys all the songs that were penned by her father, Bybit finds the hits “Baba Namai”, “Murume Wangu” and “Ndazviparira” quite appealing.
With the exception of the song “Wairegedza”, all the songs on the album titled, “The Tribute: 21 years on . . .” are all renditions. SFM radio station has already started playing some of the songs and Bybit is excited about the response she has been getting.
