WORLD Boxing Federation All Africa heavyweight champion, Elvis Victor Moyo, is ready to write his own piece of history when he fights Sors “Guru” Grobbelaar on Thursday, at Johannesburg’s Carnival City.
Moyo takes on Grobbelaar in his first cage fight which will be beamed on pay-per-view DStv’s Supersport channel.
A confident Moyo yesterday said he is ready to pounce on his opponent and get his Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC) career off to a good start.
“I have been waiting for this opportunity for a long time and I am ready to smash Grobbelaar. I feel sorry for his fans and those that are going to bet against me because they will lose their money as I will beat Grobbelaar.
“I know that winning against Grobbelaar will enhance my chances of getting more EFC fights,” Moyo said.
EFC non-championship bouts are fought in three rounds with championship matches being five rounds. Each round is five minutes.
Unlike in boxing, fighters in EFC are not allowed to enter the ring with shoes. Moyo said he will use his EFC breaks to participate in boxing.
“After losing my contract with Elev8, I saw it proper to do something so that I make money. I am turning professional in the MMA (mixed martial arts) or EFC and this means that I will concentrate more on fighting in the cages. Cage fights pay well and I know that I will dominate and become an EFC Africa champion in no time. I will still do boxing and it is my hope to conquer both areas. I am excited that I have managed to get a fight against Grobbelaar and this is an opportunity for me to prove that I deserve to be a champion,” Moyo said.
He said he needs at least three weeks between his EFC fights to train for a boxing bout.
EFC Africa stage tournaments every six weeks and Moyo will become the first Zimbabwean to participate in the growing sport which is dominated by South Africans, Ghanaians, Congolese, Nigerians and a few Egyptians.
