Bulawayo chess master Kudakwashe Sibanda scooped third position in the men’s National Chess Championships held in Harare. The championships were contested by the country’s best 16 chess players and Sibanda, who is a student at Nust, was among six players from Bulawayo. Other Bulawayo players were the highly rated Castro Sibanda, Moses Mutipforo, Tessa Gumiremhete, Nomalungelo Mathe and Phumuzile Moyo.

Bulawayo Chess Association communications manager Mutipforo said he was happy with their performance saying having two players in the top three of both the men and women’s categories was a big achievement.

“Our team did well and we can’t complain about their finishing positions because they were up against the best players in the country. It was tough for us but our two players won bronze medals,” said Mutipforo.

Harare province’s South African-based Rodwell Makoto won the men’s category followed by another Harare player Spencer Masango.

In the women’s category, Harare’s Colletta Wakuruwarewa and Tatenda Zengeni finished first and second respectively while ZRP Bulawayo’s Chess Club player Tessa Gumiremhete finished third.
