SOUTHERN Region Soccer League early pacesetters Bulawayo Chiefs have played down their title aspirations despite stretching their perfect start to three wins, saying they are still on a rebuilding exercise. Chiefs, the 2013 Southern Region champions, maintained their top spot following a 3-0 win over Technosphere on Sunday.
Goals by striker Tatenda Chikwende and midfielders Desire Shumbanhete and Mengezi Dube ensured Chiefs maintained their 100 percent run.
However, Chiefs were dealt a blow after key players Joseph Mutambiranwa and Gracious Muleya, who are vital in their midfield, picked up injuries.
“It’s still early days to talk about the championship. We’ve to re-strategise following injuries to our two midfielders against Technosphere. Mutambiranwa tore a muscle while Muleya picked up a knee injury. They will be out for a long time and we’ve to try and soldier on,” said Chiefs’ coach Thulani Sibanda.
Victoria Falls’ Amagagasi have also had a good start and are second on nine points, albeit with an inferior goal difference.
Amagagasi collected maximum points on the road, beating Black Boots 2-0 at Fairbridge, courtesy of a Lungile Nyathi brace.
Newly promoted Highlanders’ development side Highlanders 90 moved two places up the ladder from sixth to fourth following their 2-0 victory over ZRP Bulawayo Province.
The Bosso youngsters got their goals from Mandlenkosi Mnkandla and ex-Bantu Rovers and Chiefs winger Ray Lunga.
