BULAWAYO Mayor, Councillor David Coltart has made shocking revelations that the city’s councillors spend more time at workshops and getting attendance allowances, than doing actual council work.
Clr Coltart revealed that this was due to the low allowances they were getting which resulted in the councillors pushing for workshops to supplement their income.
He said this on Tuesday morning during the online programme ‘In Conversation with Trevor’ that was held at the council chambers.
“One of the things that I understood before assuming this position was that there was low moral both within councillors and council staff because of poor remuneration. I am paid US$47 per month.
“Our councillors are even paid less, so they spend too much time on these workshops than they do on the day to day practical routine that needs to be done by councillors,” said the mayor.
Clr Coltart said the city faces several challenges with water emerging as one of the major crises. He said up until they implement solutions to the problem, they have not achieved anything as yet.
“We have a very serious water crises and up until we solve that problem for our people we have not achieved anything.
“However, our vision is to stabilise the city, tidy up, ensure there is respect of the bylaws and ultimately create a conducive environment for investments,” said Clr Coltart.
