THE country’s 10 provinces will today battle it out in the Nestle sponsored National Association of Primary School Heads (Naph) Track and Field Championships at Hwange Colliery Stadium. Nestle Zimbabwe poured in $180,000 under the theme, “A healthy mind in a healthy body” for the primary schools athletics competitions across the country.

Physical education will be the first event of the day, where children will exhibit their gymnastic skills and physical ability to do given routines.

Track and field finals will be tomorrow.
Chinotimba Primary School head and Naph president Cynthia Khumalo said they are happy to have all provinces converging on Matabeleland North.

“As I said before it is our joy to host this event, we would like to welcome all provinces and I’m positive that this event will be a good one,” she said.

Khumalo confirmed that the stage is set for the biggest athletics event in the Naph calendar.
“The stage is set and everything is in order, we are having vetting today (yesterday) and then physical education will be the first thing tomorrow morning (today) while other events will be done on Thursday,” she said.

Outstanding athletes will book a berth to represent Zimbabwe in the Confederation of Schools Sports Associations of Southern Africa (Cossasa) track and field championships set for Botswana next month.

Meanwhile, Bulawayo arrived safely in Hwange and are hopeful of better fortunes with scooping the ultimate prize being their target this year.

Baines Primary School pupil Ndumiso Ncube will be carrying their hopes in the Under-13 boys’ category.
The youngster clocked 26 seconds in the 200m and 12,78 seconds in the 100m dash during the inter-district competition in Bulawayo.
Naph Bulawayo Metropolitan chairman Njabulo Bango said they are now targeting to do better than previous years in the national championships.

Matabeleland North will count on home ground advantage.
