THE MUSIC industry in Zimbabwe has proven to be a rough terrain with a few musicians managing to make a living from the trade.
Agenia “Jah Lady” Chaka is setting a new tone as the first female dance hall chanter from Bulawayo and fending for her family from the trade.
Already Jah Lady boasts of an album in her shelf and she is a title holder for best artiste for a music show that was held at Ace lounge pitting male contenders.
Unlike most artistes that approach music as a hobby, Jah Lady said that she was in dancehall fulltime, a move that many of her family members discouraged.
“Dancehall is my passion; it’s something that I do whole heartedly. Through singing I manage to take care of my family.
“At first I didn’t get the full support, but now my family understands what I do,” she said.
Being inspired by Lady Squanda in a male dominated genre, Jah Lady hinted that she was able to stay afloat by bringing new initiatives.
“For example, there was a competition where I was the only female contender, but I managed to emerge victorious. As a result I believe that it’s not all about gender, but bringing a different flair to the genre,” said Jah Lady. She further stated that she was looking forward to changing Bulawayo from being a recipient to being the largest producer of dance hall music.
