THE Bulawayo City Council (BCC) is set to honour residents who are aged 100 years and above as a way of celebrating their contributions to the city in what is expected to be an annual event.
The city will also host a cake and tea party where the centenarians will meet the mayor this year on a date to be announced.
The city fathers will interact with the elderly to find out the challenges they are facing with a view to addressing them.
The council said the initiative will enable it to appreciate the welfare of the elderly in the city.
“We realised that people’s lives are not usually celebrated when they are still alive hence this decision to meet the elderly,” said the council’s senior public relations officer Mrs Nesisa Mpofu.
“Starting this year, the city will capture names of centenarians and compile a data base for future use.”
Mrs Mpofu said the city council will work with families to determine the elderly’s ages since most of them do not have birth certificates. She said there has been an overwhelming response from the public and people are coming in their numbers to register.
She invited families whose relatives are aged 100 years and above to register with council at the city hall.
