THE Bulawayo Athletics Board (Bab) successfully held its track and field championships at White City Stadium yesterday.
BAB chairperson Watson Madanyika said the event had a good turnout.
“We had a good event with over 150 athletes taking part in the event. For our junior athletes this was an opportunity for them to enhance their chances of qualifying for the World Athletics Under-20 Championships to be held in Peru in August,” said Madanyika.
After the latest successful edition of the World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Cali in Colombia, Lima will become the first city in Peru to host a World Athletics Series event when it holds the 2024 Under-20 competition between 27-31 August.
At yesterday’s event, Mthabisi Dube won the 100m final in a time of 10.72 seconds.
In second place was Calton Siwela who managed a time of 10.73 seconds. In third place was Promise Mutorofo who finished in 10.96 seconds.
In the women’s 100m Kimberly Chiwi won in a time of 13.05 seconds followed by Zinzile Gumpo and Monalisa Yabani.
They had times of 13.26 seconds and 13.45 seconds respectively.
The 1 500m men’s final was won by Tsepo Mpofu after finishing the race in 5 minutes 19 seconds while Abigal Chanda came out first in the women’s division with a time of 5 minutes seven seconds.
Mehluli Moyo won the 200m final recording a time of 23.65 seconds.
In field events, Prince Makuna was first in the men’s shot putt with a distance of 11.78m.
Ruvimbo Murimo won the high jump with a height of 1.35m.
