BULAWAYO journalists will exchange their pens and notebooks for soccer boots when they face mobile telecoms company, NetOne employees tomorrow.
The match comes after a kit donation made to the scribes’ team by NetOne last week.
The donation was handed over by Information, Communication and Technology and Courier Services Minister Supa Mandiwanzira.
“Journalists approached Minister Mandiwandzira looking for a kit and Wi-Fi installation at their local media centre and the minister obliged. It’s part of our corporate social responsibility to assist in any way that we can,” said NetOne representative Farai Mateka.
NetOne has a social soccer team consisting its employees. The team is likely to face stiff competition from the scribes, who boast the services of stocky captain Gibson Mhaka, Fungai Muderere, Barnabus Masimba, Jeffery Muvundisi, Innocent Kurira, Nkosilathi “Sbhijo” Sibanda, the combative Dumisani Nsingo and new kid on the block Nkosilodumo Ndebele. Mehluli Sibanda is set to lead from the front.
Vice-captain Kudzai Musengi is set to pass a late fitness test.
“We figured journalists are always busy chasing deadlines, but also deserve a chance to relax and unwind and what better way to do that than playing football,” said Mateka.
The match will be played after the launch of One Money, a NetOne mobile money service.
“The match will also be a way of celebrating a new NetOne product, so both junior staff and senior management will take part in the match,” he said.
