BULAWAYO Mayor, Councillor Martin Moyo, officially distributed the Christmas Cheer Fund proceeds to 21 charity institutions yesterday at the Small City Hall. Council raised only $15,000 from a target of $50,000 for the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund to spread festive joy to underprivileged residents this year. Clr Moyo said: “Although we didn’t reach the set target of $50,000, we still managed to get something to give.”
He said the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund is an annual event to raise funds that are used to ensure vulnerable groups like the elderly, poor and orphans get a memorable Christmas.
“The city of Bulawayo is glad to be part of this blessing endeavour of caring for our vulnerable. “We’re humbled to be able to support 21 charitable institutions with goods and groceries. These will assist in the homes making this Christmas a joyful time,” said Clr Moyo.
He said he is grateful to the various partners and the corporates who have assisted. “It’s not much but it’s our hope that these will serve their purpose of bringing a smile on someone’s face this Christmas.
“The corporate sector and the entire community of Bulawayo have demonstrated their commitment to giving cheer and love at this special festive season,” said Clr Moyo.
Speaking at the same occasion, the council’s senior public relations officer, Nesisa Mpofu, said she was short of words to express her gratitude to God and all who contributed to the fund.
“It’s not the amount or quantity that matters most but the thought and the warm heart that has sacrificed to share the little that it has,” she said. In recent years council has been failing to meet its target. Mpofu said the money was not enough to cater for all charities the council had targeted.
