Byo police teams to battle it out in Commissioner’s Cup

TWO Bulawayo police football teams will next month clash in the inaugural Provincial Commissioner’s Cup sponsored by Senior Assistant Commissioner Stephen Mutamba. Snr Asst Comm Mutamba is officer commanding Bulawayo province. Although the financial package of the tournament is still under wraps, an official from the Zimbabwe Republic Police Bulawayo League, said Queens Park and Western Commonage will battle it out for the cup on October 14.

“The tournament is meant to honour our provincial commander for his continued support of our football activities,” said the league’s vice-chairman Fiso Siziba, who is also the officer in charge of Queens Park Police Station.

Siziba also revealed that the police league’s sponsors Townshend and Butcher promised to donate a trophy. On their way to the final, Western Commonage drew 4-4 against Tshabalala before progressing to the quarter-finals after Tshabalala decided against penalty shootouts.

They beat Bulawayo Central 5-4 on penalties in the quarter-finals after the match had ended 2-2 in normal time before dispatching Mzilikazi 3-0 in the semi-finals.

Queens Park started their journey with a 3-0 thumping of CID before scrapping Donnington 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 stalemate in regulation time.

Queens Park went on to beat Nkulumane Police Station 4-2 in the semi-final to set a date with Western Commonage for the title.

Frank Shumba of Western Commonage will be the key man in the final as he would be out to prove that his 16 goals in the league were not a fluke.

Queens Park will rely on Luckmore Maganga, who has scored 14 goals in the league and is third on the goal scorers’ chart.
