BULAWAYO will on August 19 crown the ugliest man in the city as the dates for the Mr Ugly Zimbabwe provincial finals have been announced by organisers.

Cecil Hotel, the venue of the auditions, was over the weekend a hive of activity as those who believed they had a shot made their way there. The provincial pageant will be held at the same venue.

According to Apama Machowa, spokesperson for the organisers, so far only four men were ugly enough to impress him during the auditions with the final list of 12 to be announced on August 17.

“There were four men who fitted our criteria in Bulawayo. The rest of them were just trying their luck. When we wrap up our auditions in Bulawayo, we will announce who the 12 are two days before the pageant”.

He said a Bulawayo People’s Choice was on the cards.

“After we release the names, Bulawayo will have a chance to choose their own ugliest person through the People’s Choice. I’m going to Harare to set up the modalities of how we will do it but it’ll be through an SMS system,” said Machowa.

He said on the night, models would escort the finalists onto the stage creating a beauty and the beast effect.

The contest has already held its preliminary rounds for Harare with two-time champion, William Masvinu shrugging off competition from five other contestants to win a place in the Mr Ugly Harare provincial finals.

Last year, 42-year-old Mison Sere won the Mr Ugly contest amid an uproar from fellow contestants who deemed him too ‘handsome’ for the title.
