The Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) has appointed Mr George Mashababe as the substantive director-general of the authority with effect from April 1, 2025.
Mr Mashababe replaces Dr Elijah Chingosho.
In a statement, CAAZ board chairperson Mrs Nonkosi Ncube confirmed the development.
“The board of directors of the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) is pleased to advise all aviation industry stakeholders and business partners of the appointment of Mr George Mashababe as the substantive director-general of CAAZ with effect from April 1, 2025,” she said.
“The appointment is in terms of Section 17 (2) of the Public Entities Corporate Governance Act [Chapter 10:31] and Section 24 of the Civil Aviation Act (Chapter 13:16).”
She said the incoming director-general is an accomplished aviation expert with a career that spans over 37 years in the field.
Mr Mashababe started at the Air Force of Zimbabwe in 1988 and later joined CAAZ in 2002 as an airworthiness inspector in the Directorate of Flight Safety and Standards.
“He rose through the ranks and was promoted to head the Directorate of Air Accidents and Serious Incidents Investigation (DAAII) in the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development in 2020, a position he held until his appointment at CAAZ,” Mrs Ncube said.
“The board welcomes Mr Mashababe’s commitment to sustain a culture of continuous review of civil aviation policies and legislative frameworks, in line with ICAO prescribed Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs).
“CAAZ management and staff extend their congratulations to Mr Mashababe on his new appointment and wish him success in his new position,” Mrs Ncube said.
