THE Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Misheck Sibanda, yesterday said Cabinet will sit today starting from 10AM. The government meeting traditionally starts at 8AM. Sibanda said the delay was as a result of another commitment, which President Mugabe wanted to attend before the meeting starts.
“The Chief Secretary wishes to further advice that the said Cabinet sitting will start at 1000 hours, and not earlier as has been the tradition. This delay owes to a prior commitment which His Excellency the President Cde RG Mugabe has to dispose of before the start of the Cabinet session which he chairs,” read the statement.
The Cabinet meeting comes at a time some senior government officials, including Vice President Joice Mujuru, are in trouble for plotting to unseat President Mugabe.
It will be interesting to see if Cde Mujuru will attend the Cabinet meeting considering that she has been boycotting some high-level Zanu-PF meetings, including the party’s just-ended 6th National People’s Congress.
Other Cabinet ministers implicated in the Mujuru plot are Presidential Affairs Minister Didymus Mutasa; Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister Nicholas Goche; Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Service Minister Webster Shamu, Energy and Power Development Minister Dzikamai Mavhaire and Youth Development, Indigenisation and Empowerment Minister Francis Nhema.
A shake-up of Cabinet is looming in the wake of the Congress resolution that all implicated in the plot to unseat the President, be punished without fear or favour; and President Mugabe’s announcement that all culprits whether at ministerial, deputy ministerial or civil service level face the boot.
