A SUSPECTED armed robber was stabbed and seriously injured by a taxi driver he had attempted to rob in Rusape on Wednesday night.
Benny Befa Munemo (21) of Chitungwiza, who was stabbed on the abdomen, is admitted at Rusape General Hospital under police guard.
Criminal Investigations Department acting spokesperson Detective Sergeant Sharon Musendo yesterday confirmed the incident.
She said Munemo hired Blessing Gotora (26) of Rusape who has a Nissan Sunny that he uses as a taxi. “Munemo lured Gotora into believing that he wanted to be taken to Rusape Industrial area where his brother resided,” Det Sgt Musendo said.
She said when they arrived in the area, Munemo “failed’’ to locate where his brother stayed, sparking an argument between the two.
Gotora ordered Munemo to disembark from his vehicle and he complied.
During the process it is alleged that Munemo produced an Okapi knife and stabbed Gotora once on the mouth.
The two wrestled until Gotora wrenched the knife from Munemo and he stabbed him once in the stomach.
Munemo, who fell on the passenger seat, called for his two other accomplices, who were hiding nearby and they came out.
Gotora then fled from the scene, leaving his vehicle and made a report to the police.
The three got into the vehicle and drove off, but their luck ran out when the vehicle was involved in an accident along Hwedza Road.
Police who were attending to the robbery scene with Gotora heard of the accident and went to the area to investigate.
Gotora identified his car and investigations revealed that the two other suspects had fled, leaving Munemo, who was later taken to Rusape General Hospital where he was in a stable condition.
