IT is almost three years since the hip-hop sector was robbed of a multi-award-winning rapper, Mgcini “Cal_Vin” Nhliziyo in a horrific hit-and-run incident and tomorrow, his memory will be brought to the front burner through a tombstone unveiling ceremony in Luveve 5.
Cal_Vin who was run over by an unidentified white car just 100 metres from his home in Luveve was buried on November 1, 2020, at Lady Stanley Cemetery, a fortress set aside for luminaries who have served the city of Bulawayo with pride. He rose to stardom in 2014, releasing his Perfect Balance album, where the song Bebengakholwa topped the local radio charts on ZiFM Stereo, Star FM, and Power FM.
Since then, his legend saw him winning a career nine awards and two Song of the Year accolades. His influence in the musical scene saw him collaborating with South African rapper Cassper Nyovest for the remix to his hit song, Z’khuphani, further tightening his grip and cementing his stance as one of the greatest rappers from not only Bulawayo but Zimbabwe too.
His career and life were prematurely cut short on that fateful October night and since then, questions have been thrown around with regard to the identity of who killed him and what for. Circumstances surrounding his death suggest that this was by no means an accident, but a carefully laid-out plan to take him out.
The rapper’s case has since become a typical, “whodunit” and the trail has grown stone-cold with police in the past dismissing Wilfred Mafuka who had handed himself over for questioning. It might be the case that someone is hiding in plain sight.
Since then, no leads have been registered and justice for the Banjalo Abantu hit-maker seems to be at arm’s length.
Indeed, someone, somewhere must have information on the whereabouts of the perpetrator(s) of the heinous crime and the latest standpoint from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is that they are keeping tabs on the case, but so far, it has been a dead end. — @MbuleloMpofu
