MIDLANDS Minister of State, Jason Machaya has called on the private sector to come on board and partner government for the successful hosting of the African Union Sports Council Region 5 Under-20 Youth Games.
The games which will run under the theme “Reaching for Greatness” will be held in Bulawayo from December 5 to 14.
Machaya was speaking in Gweru yesterday during the Games torch receiving ceremony.
He expressed government’s commitment to the successful hosting of the Games.
“I call upon various stakeholders to come and partner with the government so that we host successful games. Let me again assure you that the government has demonstrated its full commitment and support to see to it that all the necessary preparations are fully supported with both human capital, financial and any logistical support to ensure that Zimbabwe hosts a memorable event.
“As a sign of government commitment, the Head of State and Commander-in-Chief, President Mugabe appointed the Senior Minister in the Office of the President and Cabinet Simon Khaya Moyo to head a cabinet committee on these Games,” he said.
He said the coming of the Games torch has kick-started awareness of the Games throughout the province.
Said Machaya: “Today’s torch relay ceremony symbolizes the coming together of the region for the Games as well as kick-start the awareness campaign throughout the province. It is also a symbol of joy and giving power and respect through sport.”
The games torch has so far toured seven provinces and now proceeds to Matabeleland South.
