ZIMBABWE Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) chairperson Ms Fungayi Jessie Majome has urged the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) and the National Human Rights Institution (NHRIS) across the continent to do more to promote and celebrate Africa Human Rights Day on October 21.

The day marks the coming into force of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on October 21, 1986.

The day has largely gone unnoticed across the continent, with commemoration typically limited to the African Union organs and National Human Rights Institutions.

Ms Majome believes that it is time for the ACHPR and NHRIs to partner and shine a light on this day, promoting a greater understanding of human rights and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

She said that while human rights are recognised globally, Africa should also acknowledge and celebrate its own regional human rights framework, uniquely rooted in the African Charter.

“As Africans, it is important to recognise the importance of Africa Human Rights Day in promoting awareness and protection of human rights specific to the African  context.

“I was truly disappointed, and I believe it is a shame and an affront to Africa’s dignity, that despite having our own unique human rights framework rooted in the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, we often overlook its significance and fail to give it the recognition it deserves,” she said.

Ms Majome said the African Charter is unique in recognising community-based and group rights.

“As we celebrate Africa Human Rights Day, it is essential to recognise the uniqueness of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, which embodies the continent’s collectivist values that prioritise the community’s well-being over personal interests.

“Unlike Western philosophies that often emphasise individualism, our African perspective acknowledges that we are not isolated individuals, but rather interconnected members of a community.”

This year, the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) is working closely with Government institutions to commemorate Africa Human Rights Day.
