ZANU-PF Buhera West legislator Cde Oliver Mandipaka has called for further research and teaching of the country’s liberation history in schools and universities among other institutions. Debating a motion moved by MDC legislator Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga on the welfare of war veterans in the National Assembly on Thursday, Cde Mandipaka said researchers should be engaged to broaden the study of the history of the liberation struggle.
“I partially agree with Hon Misihairabwi-Mushonga to say; now there is no adequate literature about the liberation struggle. What I would recommend Mr. Speaker Sir, is that those who were in the struggle should now sit down and start to write as many books as possible of what was happening during the struggle,” said Cde Mandipaka.
“I would also recommend that our academics of the likes of Hon (Nelson) Chamisa and Hon Misihairabwi-Mushonga should begin to sit down and carry out research and write books about the liberation struggle.”
He said academics at the country’s universities should begin to carry out in-depth research of what transpired during the struggle and write books in various languages.
The MP said there was need to teach political history not only in schools and universities but to members of the armed forces as well.
Cde Mandipaka further recommended that, “in our schools at primary, secondary, university and tertiary levels, we must begin to inject a syllabus that speaks to what was happening during the liberation struggle so that we leave a legacy.
“We need our armed forces to be told the political history of the struggle so that when they perform their duties, they remain patriotic to the national interest.”
He said war veterans fought against the banning of political parties by the oppressive colonial government and the government must be applauded for giving space to different political organisations in Zimbabwe.
