IN the wake of Zimbabwe teams’ struggle at the Federation of International Basketball (Fiba) Club Championships, calls have been to adopt a vibrant junior policy to develop the game in the country.
Zimbabwe teams have had a difficult tour of Botswana and failed to make a mark despite spirited performances they often display.
Southern Mavericks’ manager Hubert Bhebhe, who travelled with the teams to Botswana, said the gap between Zimbabwe and other countries in the region could only be bridged if a vibrant junior policy was launched.
“The teams here are miles ahead of us, but l believe we can get to the same level if we have a vibrant junior policy.
“We need to change our structures at junior level; we need experienced coaches taking charge of our school teams. The schools must adopt a culture of basketball and only that way can we compete at this stage,” said Bhebhe.
Mavericks and Lakers registered one win each while Harare City Hornets were the best Zimbabwe side with two wins in a tournament that featured seven men’s and seven women’s teams.
The tournament ends tomorrow.
