ZIMBABWE’s efforts to strengthen cancer treatment services have received a major boost following the arrival of two high-energy Linear Accelerators (LINACs), advanced radiotherapy machines that will significantly enhance the country’s oncology care capacity.
The state-of-the-art equipment, supplied through Select Healthcare Pvt Ltd in partnership with Siemens Healthineers and Varian Medical Systems, arrived in the country on Thursday and is being deployed to Harare and Bulawayo.
In a media brief the Ministry of Health and Child Care said the machines represent a major milestone in modernising Zimbabwe’s cancer treatment infrastructure and improving access to specialised oncology services.
Health and Child Care Minister, Douglas Mombeshora, and Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion Minister, Professor Mthuli Ncube, are expected to witness the arrival of the equipment at NatPharm in Bulawayo this morning, Friday
LINACs are advanced radiotherapy machines that use high-energy radiation beams to precisely target and destroy cancerous tumours while minimising damage to surrounding healthy tissue. The technology is regarded as a critical component of modern cancer treatment.
According to the Ministry, the arrival of the equipment will substantially increase Zimbabwe’s cancer treatment capacity, reduce the need for patients to seek expensive treatment outside the country and support the Government’s drive towards accessible, world-class oncology services.
The development comes as Government continues investing in health infrastructure, equipment and specialist services aimed at improving healthcare delivery and outcomes for Zimbabweans.
