CAPS UNITED coach Mark Mathe gave fast rising goalkeeper Chris Mverechena a reality check after watching the 19-year-old make a number of howlers that could have cost his team dearly at Luveve yesterday.

The goalless draw saw Makepekepe collecting four points from the Gamecocks after beating them 2-0 in the reverse fixture of this Castle Lager Premier Soccer League tie.

However, this is one game Makepekepe could have lost by a wide margin had Chicken Inn strikers been more precise in front of goal.

Mathe was relieved his team walked away with a point.

“We will take the point we got today, we defended very well and with a bit of urgency we could have snatched a win.

“I have to say that the young goalie Chris (Mverechena) is still learning, he was making mistakes, his ball distribution was also not up to scratch sometimes but we will work on that aspect,” said Mathe.

Makepekepe dropped from fifth to sixth on the log following FC Platinum’s 2-0 victory over Buffaloes at Mandava yesterday.

Log leaders Chicken Inn, who moved to 30 points after yesterday’s result , dominated the match and could have gone to half time leading by at least two goals.

Triangle can now overtake Chicken Inn if they beat Highlanders at Gibbo this afternoon.

The gangly Bhekimpilo Ncube had his header cleared off the line by impressive Caps United centre back Stephen Makatuka, veteran Clement Matawu shot wide inside the box while Tafadzwa Kutinyu’s long range drive went wide as the hosts dominated the first 15 minutes of the contest.

Young Caps United right back Valentine Musarurwa’s timely block in the 38th minute kept the scoreboard in virgin territory.

Chicken Inn skipper Danny “Deco” Phiri had a golden chance to win the contest for the Gamecocks in the 89th minute but headed wide from close range.

Even the introduction of the Premiership’s top scorer Edmore Chirambadare in the second half failed to bring a goal for the hosts who were desperate for the three points.

Chicken Inn coach Joey Antipas was a disappointed man.

“I am still failing to understand why we did not win this game. We created a number of chances but we failed to convert them.

“We just have to focus on our next game but I must admit we were desperate for the three points,” said Antipas.

Chicken Inn travel to Dongo Sawmills in their next encounter while Caps United host inconsistent Harare City.
