Car smuggler appears in court

A Harare man has appeared in court today for allegedly smuggling a vehicle into the country.

Tinashe Mangadza who is being represented by his lawyer Mr Stephen Chikotora appeared before Harare magistrate Mrs Marehwanazvo Gofa charged with illegal importation of goods without paying duty.

He was given US$150 bail. The matter was remanded to December 14.

The State alleges that between 2020 and 2021, the accused hatched a plan to smuggle a Toyota Hilux GD6 from South Africa into Zimbabwe.

In pursuance of his plan, Mangadza in connivance with Blessing Matinyarare and Shepherd Hove, to sell the vehicle for US$14 000, registration plates for USD$1 200 to Fungai Chimwamukombe.

Mangadza did the fraudulent activities in order to evade paying duty for the smuggled vehicles and pass through toll gates without paying.

 Information was then received by the police leading to the arrest of Mangadza yesterday.

The smuggled motor vehicle was impounded and the fraudulently affixed sets of number plates were recovered.
