Beitbridge BureauPOLICE have arrested another suspect in possession of a vehicle that was stolen in South Africa and smuggled into Zimbabwe via the Limpopo River. Prosper Mafuta was busted in the Mabidi suburb when detectives tracked the stolen Audi A4 to his home in Beitbridge town.
The car was reported stolen in South Africa on September 7 before being smuggled to Zimbabwe.
Mafuta was not asked to plead to the charges when he appeared before Beitbridge regional magistrate, Charity Maphosa, charged for theft of a motor vehicle yesterday.
He was remanded in custody to September 22 pending a ruling on his bail application.
Prosecuting, Willbrought Muleya said on September 8 this year, CID detectives received a tip-off about the stolen vehicle, with a tracker, which had been smuggled into the country.
They then proceeded to Mabidi suburb where they located the South African registered Audi A4 and arrested Mafuta.
Further investigations revealed that the car had been reported stolen in South Africa.
It was also found out that the vehicle had been affixed with fake registration number plates to conceal the crime.
Last week, the police intercepted a Toyota Lexus which had been stolen and smuggled using the same route from South Africa into Zimbabwe.
