DARING thieves are now reportedly targeting and breaking into parked vehicles for staff and visitors at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo.

Reports suggest that the thieves mainly operate during visiting hours and have stolen property worth thousands of dollars from both visitors and hospital staff. Police in Bulawayo confirmed the criminal activity, saying they were hot on the trail of the thieves, as they were investigating the crimes.

“I can confirm that there has been a spate of robberies at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo, where thieves have been breaking into parked vehicles wily nilly. We are handling several reports of break ins, where in most cases thieves steal laptops, cellphones, car batteries, radios and other valuables,” said Bulawayo acting spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele.

She urged members of the public to avoid leaving their vehicles at isolated places at the hospital and also ensure that their vehicles are secured.

“Members of the public should ensure that their vehicles are secure when they visit their relatives or friends. Also they should try and avoid leaving valuables in their vehicles as this attracts thieves to their vehicles. Even when locking the vehicles they should double check to see if they are properly locked,” Asst Insp Msebele said.

Hospital staff that spoke to this publication, said the thieves were very daring as they were breaking into vehicles at the car park. A victim of the robbery said he suspected that the thieves could have been working with security at the hospital.

“I found my car broken into and my belongings missing. What is shocking is that they are so daring to break into vehicles at a hospital. This surely is a syndicate and they must be working with the security.”
