RESIDENTS of Manningdale and Buena Vista suburbs in Bulawayo are living in fear following a series of home invasions by a gang of machete-wielding robbers, who have repeatedly targeted homes over the past month.
The gang, reportedly comprising four to six men, has struck several homes during night-time raids, breaking doors and windows to gain access and demanding money while brandishing machetes.
Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, confirmed some of the incidents, urging residents to strengthen security and report any suspicious movements.
“In all reported cases, the suspects took only cash. They ignored cellphones, laptops, and other valuables, which indicates that their sole aim is to collect money,” Insp Msebele said.
In one chilling incident in Manningdale, a family was robbed of US$2 000.
“They stormed into our home. Within seconds, they were in the bedroom. It was terrifying. They demanded cash and threatened that if we delayed, they would harm us. They took all the money we had and left,” a victim recounted.
Insp Msebele said police have launched a manhunt, working closely with neighbourhood committees to track down the suspects. She warned residents against confronting the criminals directly.
“Ensure your security systems are functional, including alarms, perimeter lighting, and strong door locks. Report any suspicious vehicles or individuals immediately,” she said.
Buena Vista, an upmarket suburb, has also been repeatedly targeted, with some homes hit more than once by the same gang.
According to residents, the robbers often operate after midnight, cutting security fences, disabling lights, and forcing their way into houses while families sleep. In one case, a family was held hostage while the gang ransacked the home.
Local neighbourhood watch teams said they will increase patrols and work with residents to gather information and alert authorities when threats arise. They also called for more streetlights and security cameras in dark spots.
Bulawayo has recently seen a spike in robberies across several suburbs, with police linking some attacks to organised criminal syndicates specifically targeting affluent areas.
Authorities continue to urge communities to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity.
