FORMER Sports Minister Andrew Langa has challenged Highlanders FC to cast their net wider by visiting rural schools during football tournaments to scout for talent.
Langa said this during a Highlanders tour of the grave of their founder Albert Khumalo in Gwatemba, Insiza district, on Sunday. Khumalo died in 1952 and is buried alongside some of his sons and members of the royal clan.
The entire Bosso first team players, former players as well as some members of the board and executive and fans took part in the trip as part of the club’s 90th anniversary.
It was an emotional moment when the bus carrying the delegation arrived at the Khumalo homestead where one of the descendants of King Mzilikazi, Prince Zwidekalanga Khumalo, addressed them.
“I want to challenge Highlanders to come up with a deliberate programme of visiting rural schools during their tournaments. Let’s take away the notion that talent is only found in urban schools.
“We have talented children in the rural areas and Bosso must make full use of that. It’s only that these children don’t get an opportunity to train with Highlanders as they can’t be in Njube, Makokoba or Lobengula,” said Langa, who is the MP for Insiza North.
He said the talent identification programme would help the club with a constant supply of raw talent.
“I heard that Bosso’s next match will be away to FC Platinum in Zvishavane and I am told they will pass through this place. I want to promise them that from the match, we are going to have a braai and a few drinks right here because we love Highlanders. I am not ashamed to tell you that I am Bosso through and through. My DNA is black and white, hence what we are doing for the team,” said Langa.
