The Bulawayo Rainbow Hotel last weekend hosted a colorful vibrant MasterChef event for children teaching them culinary skills, a move which will motivate them to grow up focused on making good career choices for themselves.
Unlike the competitive MasterChef television show for adults, this particular one was held under the watchful eyes of Chef Revai Baka and Chef Aaron among other chefs as they brought together about 30 children in categories of 6-8 years and 9-10 years who were carefully monitored as they did their food preparations.
They kicked off by making fruit kebabs followed by taking it to the hot plate stoves where they made pancakes and burgers. They were given room to showcase their creativity even though the ingredients were the same.
Their presentations were very different, the children tried their best to be artistic in their final presentations.
As we all know that pancakes are popular with most young ones, some carefully and artistically decorated theirs with syrup which was very much enticing and for the rest it was food which they ready to eat.
The chef’s recipes were great enough to lure the kids who were super excited to create their favorite food.
Young Sarah Kamoyo who openly showed her excitement as soon as she entered the room said, “I love eating burgers and pancakes with syrup so I am happy that I am learning to cook them on my own and I am planning to ask my mother if I can cook at home every day,” she said.
“As the saying goes that experience is the best teacher, Rainbow Tourism Group should be applauded for catching these young people while in their tender age,” commented Sarah’s mum Lindane Madonko.
“Unfortunately because of our busy schedules speaking for most parents we do not get time to actually stand on the stove and teach our children how to cook. Mainly it will only be about following the daily routine of monitoring their homework after a long day from work. This initiative by Bulawayo Rainbow Hotel is sincerely applauded and we are looking forward to more events like this.”
Kupakwashe Mutema who was accompanied by her mother said that she was considering a career as a chef in the future after wearing the white chef’s hat and apron a sentiment which was on the mouth of most of the young aspiring chefs who attended the event.
The kids’ excitement in making their own pancake and producing a good result showed that even at home they will be able to at least prepare something basic to eat. In this age and era where playing house (mahumbwe) the traditional way where children used to gather firewood, make a fire and cook in old pots and tins is slowly fading, so MasterChef might be the new “mahumbwe” for most children.
They were later treated to a three course hearty buffet lunch in the famous Loziba
Restaurant giving what one of the hotel seniors acting food and beverage manager Tinashe Mapfumo, a Rainbow Tourism Group best of the best waitron service no matter the age.
The children’s MasterChef event will be hosted in all the Rainbow Hotels country wide according to the their head office representative.
The parents and guardians of all the participants were pleased to have signed up their kids and they all apparently agreed that they will be happy if it will be turned into a competition so that they will maintain their culinary skills and maybe turn it into a business or even come up with the future MasterChef adult superstar.
