THE 25-member Parliamentary Select Committee has formally adopted the revised draft Constitution, marking the end of the drafting phase of Zimbabwe’s new supreme law.
The committee is now finalising a report that will accompany the draft to Parliament on Tuesday.
Copac co-chairperson Cde Munyaradzi Paul Mangwana told journalists yesterday that they would move a motion next Tuesday seeking permission to present the draft.
“It is our hope that after the motion, Parliament will permit us to present our reports on Wednesday,” he said.
Once the draft is adopted by Parliament, a publicity campaign to inform and educate Zimbabweans on its contents would begin.

Bank charges to go down substantially

BANK charges will soon be reduced substantially following negotiations between the banking sector and the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe amid concerns that the current level of charges was against international banking practice.
Reserve Bank Governor Dr Gideon Gono disclosed this while presenting his 2013 Monetary Policy Statement in Harare yesterday.
He said 25 banks yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding that will chart the way forward.
“Zimbabweans across the board are agreed that the level of bank charges is out of line with international best practice. It is heartening to note that after 75 days of negotiations, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe and the banking sector came up with an agreed framework which will see substantial reduction in bank charges,” said Dr Gono.
Some of the issues covered under the MoU include a clause that the participating financial institutions will be obliged to pay interest on amounts of $1 000 and above held over a period of at least 30 days.All set for netball super league promotional play-offs

HIV patients in dilemma

THOUSANDS of people living with HIV risk succumbing to infections due to a shortage of cotrimoxazole, an antibiotic used to fight common infections caused by a compromised immune system, in public hospitals.
In separate interviews recently, the affected people said each time they visited public health institutions, they were told that the drug was in short supply and were advised to buy it from private pharmacies.
“There is a serious shortage of cotrimoxazole in the country and that affects our health. When we go to clinics to collect anti-retroviral (ARV) drugs, those who are supposed to take cotrimoxazole are told to buy their own from pharmacies,” said Mrs Elizabeth Sibanda, the advocacy officer for Zimbabwe National Network for People Living with HIV (ZNNP+) in Bulawayo.
