President Mugabe, who also arrived yesterday, will officially open the party’s biggest event at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) grounds today.

Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (Zanu-PF) is a total political, indigenous economic emancipation and a national liberation movement package for Zimbabweans by Zimbabweans prepared to shed their blood in defence of their sovereignty at all times.
Founding president of united Zanu-PF
Cde Mugabe is the founding President and First Secretary of the united Zanu-PF which came into being after the signing of the Unity Accord between his Zanu-PF and PF-Zapu on 22 December 1987. He signed for Zanu-PF while Dr Joshua Nkomo signed for PF-Zapu. The united Zanu-PF has since then, dominated the local political scene, not only because of its close history with the masses dating back to the liberation war, but also its people-centred programmes.
President opens conference today
Zanu-PF’s 12th Annual National People’s Conference started in Bulawayo yesterday with delegates arriving from all over the country.
The conference, being held under the theme “Defend National Sovereignty, Consolidate Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment,” ends on Saturday. It is being held at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair Grounds.
President Mugabe, president and first secretary of Zanu-PF started proceedings for the event yesterday by officiating at the party’s traditional tree planting ceremony. The Head of State and Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, plants a tree on the first day of every Zanu-PF conference or congress.
President Mugabe, who has dubbed it a party mini-congress as it comes on the eve of a national election next year, will officially open the four-day conference today. Tomorrow and on Saturday, the
conference breaks into committees where key issues of party and national concern would be discussed and resolutions agreed. Items topping the agenda include the economic indigenisation programme, agriculture, and the constitution-making programme.
“The indigenisation programme is the main topic,” said Zanu-PF Secretary for Information and Publicity, Cde Rugare Gumbo.
