YOUNG Catherine Zevgolis is making history on the motor race tracks with her 15-year-old brother Gregory.
Zevgolis, gave Adrian Watt, an experienced racer, a torrid time at Donnybrook Park Raceway in Harare on Sunday for the first Sables Drag-pro Motor Racing event of the 2024 season, sponsored by Ezytrack.
The 17-year-old Catherine came second with an impressive time of one minute 20.072 seconds, just a few seconds behind the winner, Adrian Watt, who had a time of one minute 19.713 seconds in the National C Class race.
“Sunday’s event was a great start to the 2024 season, a successful day of racing for me, though the competition was tough. I’m very grateful for the opportunity to be showcasing my talent this year. I am excited and looking forward to the rest of the season,” said Zevgolis.
Zevgolis enjoyed a good day of racing in her Honda CRX, posting a two-second improvement on her fastest lap time from last year and now holds the second fastest time achieved by a female racer on this circuit.
Melissa Watt also took part in the races and came seventh ahead of Gregory in the event at Donnybrook Racetrack C Class.
Adrian took first place, Catherine was in second place and Tyrone Ferreira third on the podium from a field of nine cars at the starting grid.
“My children performed very well in all the races and I’m proud of their improvements on their speed and times. I’m hoping they do better in the lined up events and grateful they got an opportunity to race,” said Susan Zevgolis, a proud and supportive mother to Catherine and Gregory.
Gregory, the 15-year-old male racer came eighth and it was a decent show for a new comer in racing, with a time of one minute 29.292 seconds, which was very impressive for a boy his age and the competition he was facing.
“Though it’s early days for young Gregory, there is room for improvement,” said the mother.
Zevgolis hopes to make it to Bulawayo Motorsport Park in April for the second event in the 2024 Motor racing calendar.
She is sponsored by Protyre Zimbabwe.
