ST Francis Catholic Church in Chegutu has embarked on a drugs and substance abuse awareness programme .

Roman Catholic members, and other stakeholders, marched from Nyangani through Westend to the Chegutu main shopping centre.

They had banners with messages raising awareness on the dangers of drugs and substance abuse.

Chegutu Acting District Development Coordinator, Dzosai Muzvidziwa-Chari, who was represented by Ass DDC Dementria Chipwanya, challenged parents to play their role to help curb drugs and substance abuse.

“I urge you to play your parental roles in order to curb drugs and substance abuse in your families, you have the role monitor all their activities and to note changes in their behaviour so as to detect early signs of drugs and substance abuse.

“Drugs and substance abuse is a concern in the district because we’re losing our productive generation to drugs.

“Chegutu district is endowed with natural resources so I urge our youths to take advantage of government programmes of empowerment for nation building.”

An inmate at Kadoma Prison, Liberty Chagadama, who is serving time for theft and unlawful entry, gave a testimony of how drug abuse almost ruined his life.

“I would like thank the Prison Services for saving my life and how they have rehabilitated me to stay away from drugs.

“I have 8 O’ Level passes and I went to Mupfure College where I met someone who introduced me to drugs.

“I began indulging in drugs and later dropped from college to concentrate on drugs and I became a criminal.

“I was arrested and sentenced to do time in prison but now I have seen how bad drugs are and so I urge all the youths not to take drugs.”
