CBC Hornets edge closer to U20 rugby league title

CHRISTIAN Brothers College (CBC) Hornets are edging closer to the Bulawayo Metropolitan Rugby Football Board (BMRFB) Under-20 League title after recording another win on Saturday at Hartsfield Rugby Grounds with one game to go.

Hornets edged third placed Raging Bulls 31-3 to go four points clear at the top of the log standings as the league edges closer to completion with one round of fixtures remaining. 

The college side has played four games and won all, scoring 108 points and conceding just 29. They have also been awarded three bonus points so far and their opponents, Bulls have played one less game and are on 10 points having won two and lost one. 

In other matches that took place on Saturday, second placed Western Suburbs Academy won a close encounter against Bulldogs 19-12 to keep up the pressure on the log leaders as they moved to 15 points. The Academy side has won three and lost one game, scoring 114 points and conceding 47 in the process. They also have three bonus points.

In what was the first match of the day, Old Miltonians (OMs) edged Highlanders 11-0 to record their first win of the season at the latter stages of the competition. 

The Bulawayo league was not the only one taking place this weekend as the Paramount Garments Under-20 action also had matches in Harare on Saturday. Pitbulls continued their fine form with yet another win after edging second placed Old Hararians 34-28. Harare Sports Club thumped Horns 41-7 while Northern Chiefs won 26-14 against Zimbiru and Old Georgians thumped FS Raiders 43-0.

Pitbulls who are leading have 35 points while OH in second place are on 31 points. Old Georgians occupy third spot with 25 points and in position four is Harare Sports Club with 21 points followed by Chiefs on 15 and Raiders on 10 points. The bottom two is made up of Zimbiru and Horns who have six and zero points respectively.

Three women’s premiership matches were also played where Harare Sports Club thumped Hatcliffe 30-0 while Zimbiru edged OGs Pitbulls 22-14. One development match was played between Pioneers and Glenwood Stars which the former won 22-10.

Zimbiru are sitting on top of the standings in the women’s league with 19 points followed by Raiders on 15 points and OGs Pitbulls on 14. Harare Sports Club and Hatcliffe have six and zero points respectively at the bottom of the standings.

Both the Bulawayo and Harare league continue this coming weekend.    @brandon_malvin
