THE week two Carling Black Label national pool qualifiers were successfully held in Harare North, Gwanda and Kwekwe amid revelations that 15 players have qualified for the national finals.
The qualifiers started a fortnight ago with action being held in Zvishavane, Mutoko, Chinhoyi, Rusape and Chitungwiza.
The Week Two games saw five women, Angeline Muzopambwa, Alice Manzwiyi, Rejoice Mavunga, Jesmary Muswe get their tickets to the national finals after conquering all and sundry in Harare North.
In the men’s contest, Batanai Mukonzo, Tendekuyai Solani, Weston Matshika and Ashwell Mazarura did well to earn their places in the national rivalry.
In Gwanda, Nqobani Dube, Vusumuzi Moyo and Lynette Kitumetsi emerged as winners.
The Kwekwe qualifiers ushered Richard July, Forget Banda and Thabiso Chikono to the national competition that is set to be hosted by Masvingo Province.
“The qualifiers are getting exciting by each passing weekend. We are happy that we once again had an incident free weekend as games were played in the true spirit of sportsmanship. Week Three action will be held in Marondera, Chegutu, Mvurwi, Gweru, Murambinda and Chiredzi,” said Zimbabwe Pool Association (ZIPA) public relations officer Donald Wadawu.
Hustlers Bar, Patsime Bar, Tam Tambar, Geez Nightclub, Enjoy Nite Club and Waters Bar will play host to Marondera, Chegutu, Mvurwi, Gweru, Murambinda and Chiredzi engagements respectively.
The weekly qualifiers that have over the years attracted hordes of billiards players are set to end on July 3.
According to Wadawu, over 2 000 players are expected to have competed in the 2023 edition of the national pool championship qualifiers.
Only provinces that are compliant with ZIPA requirements relating to affiliation fees and player databases or have made acceptable arrangements have been allowed to take charge of Carling Black Label tournaments within their area of jurisdiction.
Sponsored by Delta Beverages, the national finals will be played on July 9 after completion of provincial finals.
The competition is open to participants above 18 years.
