An oversubscribed edition of CBZ marathon is expected to attracted as many as 1750 athletes; all of whom will be vying for the title, when the race gets underway at Old Georgians Sports Club this Sunday.
Inaugural champion Munyaradzi Jari is expected to defend his title in the 42 kilometer race, while the in-form Jonathan Chinyoka should give him a race his money.
Edward Muthibi, who is South Africa’s top marathon runner and the reigning Comrades Marathon champion, will also be part of the race.
The CBZ Marathon is used as a qualifier for the Two Oceans and Comrades marathons in South Africa.
Speaking to Sunday mail, Harare Athletics Club captain, Dereck Sigauke, said this year ‘s subscription has set a new record.
“The response was awesome; the quota was 1 750 runners and we filled it up within 48 hours of opening of the electronic registration method.
“It is a pleasing response; which is evidence that people have become more health conscious, and that they have fallen in love with the event.
“We are already looking forward to the next edition,” he said.
Sigauke said the brand has grown and become more popular, such that it has attracted more participants and stakeholders.
The event has also grown to be of immense value to the country’s top runners, simultaneously escalating the level of competition.
“The purse places the race amongst the richest in the country, if not the richest so far.
“Having big names like Muthibi adds some high profile international flavor; and that places us on the map, as a brand to be reckoned with,” said Sigauke.
