Changing Perspectives

Our world is a different mosaic, composed of countless threads of different cultures, languages, traditions and religions.

Finding common ground can almost sound impossible but, diversity is not merely a buzzword, it is the bedrock of human experience that often enrich our lives with different perspectives and opportunities.

Instead of quarrelling and fighting over our differences, it is time to embrace this richness and celebrate the beauty of our differences. Celebrate diversity, celebrate the input of SADC.

The Southern African Development Community is a cornerstone of regional cooperation in Southern Africa for decades.

Established in 1980, its mission is to promote economic growth, development and cooperation among its member states.

The regional body also plays a crucial role in fostering peace, security and prosperity in the region among many other roles. Amidst the many challenges that it faces, SADC has achieved considerable progress.

When you think of the pillar of regional cooperation and development, think of SADC.

Infrastructure, sustainable and human development regional integration, peace and security, environmental protection, among others are mission possible because of SADC. Increased trade, shared resources, investment attraction, a collective voice among many others, are all mission possible because of SADC.

SADC is a true representation of diversity. I can go on and on and write a book, I would like to believe that the snippet given in this article provides an insight to the magnitude of work that SADC does.

Yes, challenges are there and will continue to be there but, today let us agree to celebrate what is good.

Diversity is a catalyst for innovation, creation and progress. When people of different backgrounds come together, they bring unique ideas, skills and experience to the table. People with different perspectives and experience can lead to ground-breaking solutions to complex problems.

Many organisations, especially big ones are comprised of diverse teams who under normal circumstances should contribute towards better problem solving.

Sadly, in many organisations people tend to compete instead of complimenting one another.

It is a sad thing that you probably find employees exercising stereotype as a result of differences in culture, race or background.

Working effectively in diverse groups can be challenging if not properly managed. Often times, management struggle over dealing with diverse teams.

Embracing diversity can be very challenging if not properly planned for. Some of the strategies that management can adopt in dealing with diverse teams are shared as follows.

Cultural awareness

The moment an organisation gets to employ teams with different cultures, managers should try as much to learn about the different cultures and customs to have basic understanding.

It is also helpful if managers get to alert the rest of the teams about their differences and how they are all important and valued. This can help team members to understand and appreciate each other’s perspectives.

Identify potential barriers

Managers should be aware of potential barriers to effective teamwork such as language differences, cultural misunderstandings or biases and help teams on how to handle such.

In this world where people travel from one continent to another in search of greener pastures, teams are becoming more diverse than ever.

The better approach in coming up with strategies to deal with differences maybe that of including the teams in strategising around it.

Establish clear expectations

Set clear expectations for team behaviour and communication to avoid misunderstandings and conflicts. Consider implementing mentorship programmes to provide support and guidance for team members from underrepresented groups.

Cross cultural experiences

Create opportunities for cross cultural experiences such as team building activities and cultural exchange programmes. Offer diversity and inclusion training to help team members develop the skills and knowledge needed to work effectively in diverse teams.

Equality

Ensure that all team member have access to the resources and support that they need to succeed regardless of their background and circumstances.  By following these strategies in this document and many more other strategies, teams can harness the power of diversity and create a more inclusive and productive work environment. Building diverse and inclusive teams take time, effort and strategy but, the results can be significant. Studies have shown that diverse teams are more productive, profitable and likely to perform more than homogeneous groups.

Strive Masiiwa once said, “Diversity is strength.”

Celebrating diversity means recognising and valuing the contributions of all cultures and supporting initiatives that promote inclusivity.

It means challenging stereotyping and discrimination. I would like to challenge, inspire and encourage everyone to celebrate the rich tapestry of our world by embracing diversity that surrounds us.

Our differences are not divisions but rather opportunities for growth and enrichment.

Let us not make diversity a slogan only but, a reality that shapes our world.

Let us create a vibrant, inclusive and prosperous future for all. Let us build a world where everyone feels valued and respected. Together we can build a more equitable and harmonious society. We are the change we wish to see, if you and I begin to be the change we wish today, tomorrow becomes more enjoyable.
