In a remarkable demonstration of courage and determination, Lordwin Rimire, a student with a disability at the University of Zimbabwe, recently contested the presidential elections for student representatives under the Zimbabwe Congress of Students’ Union (ZICOSU) and victoriously became the vice president of the University of Zimbabwe.
This historic moment in the annals of the university deserves our utmost admiration and celebration.
Additionally, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Elisha Gumbo, who, as the first person with a disability to contest for the position of Secretary General, has paved the way for countless individuals with disabilities to actively participate in politics.
As a disability advocate, I am immensely proud of their groundbreaking efforts and would like to encourage all persons with disabilities to take part and hold positions in politics, ensuring that their issues are promptly addressed.
Lordwin’s decision to contest the presidential elections at the University of Zimbabwe was a bold step towards fostering inclusivity and empowering individuals with disabilities. By challenging the status quo, Lordwin has shattered barriers and opened doors for others facing similar challenges.

This momentous occasion serves as a testament to the fact that disability should never be a hindrance to pursuing aspirations, including political ambitions.
Lordwin’s campaign has not only raised awareness about the abilities and potential of individuals with disabilities but has also inspired a new generation of disabled students to actively engage in the political sphere.
In Lordwin’s words; “It’s high time we do not just cry when policies which do not support people with disabilities are put into place but be part of decision-makers and implementers of these policies.

Elisha Gumbo’s historic candidacy for the position of Secretary General has marked a significant milestone in the journey toward inclusive politics.
As the first person with a disability to contest for this position, Elisha has broken down societal barriers and set a precedent for others to follow. His determination and resilience have paved the way for an inclusive political landscape, where individuals with disabilities can make their voices heard and contribute to shaping policies and decisions that affect their lives in Elisha’s words; “being elected into office was the defying odds moment.”
“I made a vow that I will be a source of motivation and inspiration to all persons with disabilities.”
“Given another opportunity I am taking this to the next level which is national politics.”
“I am keen even to become the first member of Parliament with a disability. I see a future in Zimbabwe where people with disabilities are Elected into Parliament. I am proud of Lordwin Rimire for being the first Vice President of UZ with a disability.
“This is a sign of participation of persons with disabilities in decision-making platforms,” he said.
Lordwin and Elisha’s trailblazing journeys should serve as an inspiration for all persons with disabilities who aspire to engage in politics.
By participating in political processes, disabled individuals can play an instrumental role in shaping policies, laws, and social attitudes that directly impact their lives.
It is crucial to foster an inclusive political environment where individuals with disabilities are encouraged to contest for various positions and have equal opportunities to participate in decision-making processes.
