A 26-YEAR-OLD Mutare man has been fined US$108 after pleading guilty to stealing a cellphone from a parked commuter omnibus in Chikanga 2.
Caleb Tandi, of Garikai 1, Mutare, appeared before Mutare provincial magistrate, Mr Tendai Mahwe, facing theft charges as defined in Section 113(1) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act [Chapter 9:23].
The matter was recorded under Chikanga CR 72/09/26.
Prosecutor, Ms Sadra Mlambo, said Tandi stole a Nokia C21 Plus cellphone belonging to Mr Soul Mudzimu (31), of Gimboki, Dangamvura, on September 28.
The court heard that Mr Mudzimu is employed by Maringira Tours.
Ms Mlambo said the incident occurred at around 7.30am at Chikanga 2, when Tandi approached a parked commuter omnibus (ACZ 715).
The court heard that Tandi entered the vehicle, and stole Mudzimu’s Nokia C21 Plus cellphone, which was connected to a charger.
Mr Mudzimu noticed the theft and apprehended Tandi before handing him over to the police.
The total value of the stolen property was US$40 and the cellphone was recovered.
Tandi was convicted on his own guilty plea and was fined US$108.
