THE Zifa Central Soccer League (CSL) enters the twilight stages of the season with midweek fixtures lined up across the region this afternoon.

Focus is now firmly on the promotional race, which is now a three horse affair pitting log leaders Nichrut, Tongogara and Whawha.

Going into this afternoon’s matches, Whawha will assume pole position until 5pm, as they will be awarded the game against Gwanda United on a 3–0 score line after the Matabeleland South outfit was expelled from the league.

Whawha will move up to 68 points while Nichrut and Tongogara have to win their games to reclaim pole position from the prison wardens.

Nichrut, who have hit a rich vein of form and are coming from a 4–0 thrashing of their Shurugwi homeboys Makusha, travel to Gwanda for a date with unpredictable ZRP Gwanda.

Tongogara are in Shurugwi for a date with Makusha.

Nichrut coach John Nyikadzino described today’s encounter as “very important” and said he would want to ensure they collect maximum points.

“This is the critical stage of the league if you consider where we are and our competitors. What we need to do now is to maintain consistency and tomorrow’s (today) game against ZRP Gwanda is very important because we can’t afford to drop points,” said Nyikadzino.

His Tongogara counterpart Kelvin Maphosa also emphasised on consistency.

“We cannot afford to drop points at this stage and we will not give up, we will fight to the bitter end. What I have been telling the boys is to be consistent and have self-belief. There is no reason we cannot collect maximum points from Makusha tomorrow (today),” he said.
