adminCAPE TOWN. – It was once again the “Chad and Cameron show” as South Africa’s top two swimmers struck gold at the FINA Short Course World Championships in Canada.While South Africa sent an inexperienced team to the world championships, it was “old timers” Chad le Clos and Cameron van der Burgh who flew the national flag with aplomb.
Le Clos (24) swept the boards in the men’s butterfly, winning the 50m, 100m and 200m titles, and claimed silver in the 200m freestyle. In addition, Le Clos broke his own world record in taking gold in the 100m butterfly.
In Sunday’s final session of action, Van der Burgh (28) surged to victory in the men’s 50m breaststroke. Swimming out of Lane 1, Van der Burgh stopped the clock in 25.64, a fraction outside his own world record of 25.25.
South Africa’s four golds and one silver were good enough for fourth place in the final standings. The USA topped the standings with 8 golds, 15 silvers and 6 bronze medals, for a haul of 29 medals overall. – AFP.
