Chahwanda Stadium sets benchmark for Zimbabwe’s football facilities

FROM wilderness to wonderland, Chahwanda Stadium has risen from the ashes, transforming a once dense forest into a magnificent sports hub that has left the city of Kwekwe in awe.

In a spectacular first match, the stadium hosted a thrilling encounter between Hardrock FC and Scottland FC, marking the return of top flight football to the Midlands city, after a 17 year absence.

The atmosphere was electric, with a capacity crowd of football supporters and curious residents flocking to witness the historic occasion.

The stadium’s state of the art facilities, complete with European style amenities, left a lasting impression on those in attendance. “This is a dream come true,” beamed Mayor of Kwekwe, Albert Zinhanga.

“Chahwanda Stadium is a beacon of hope and a testament to the city’s resilience and determination.

We’re thrilled to welcome back top-flight football to Kwekwe, and we’re confident that this stadium will be a catalyst for growth and development in our city.”

“I could see people walking from as far as Mbizo, which is about 8km to 10km to the venue. I could see the excitement in them. It is one of the best stadiums I have seen in Zimbabwe where everyone has his own seat, clean ablution facilities. The teams played a good game, worthy the money paid for. I want to thank Mr Chahwanda for giving us an opportunity to watch top-flight football. It is going to bring the much-needed social rehabilitation,” said Zinhanga.

Fifteen months ago, in November 2024, the site where the stadium now stands was still a thick forest.

The Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Midlands Province, Owen Ncube, presided over the ground-breaking ceremony, marking the start of a new chapter in Kwekwe’s sporting landscape.

Fast forward to today, and the transformation is nothing short of remarkable.

Hardrock FC, the proud owners of the stadium, have enjoyed a meteoric rise. After winning the Zifa Midlands Division 2 title — an achievement that coincided with the ground-breaking ceremony — they earned promotion to Division 1 and went on to dominate the league, clinching the championship by the end of the 2026 season. Their impressive run secured their return to the Premier Soccer League (PSL), and what a return it proved to be.

Adding to the excitement, AmaZulu FC Chairman Sandile Zungu and his delegation made a special visit, stepping onto the pitch and adding a touch of glamour to the big day.

“This is a great day for football in Zimbabwe,” said Central Region Handball League Chairperson, Edison Chiroodzo.

“We’re proud to see top-flight football returning to Kwekwe, and we’re confident that Chahwanda Stadium will be a hub of activity for years to come. The atmosphere inside and outside the stadium was exciting and charged. It was a huge moment for the host and visitors.”

Noah’s Ark Group of Schools Principal, Reggie Phiri, was equally impressed.

“From the moment I stepped into the state-of-the-art venue, I was immersed in the excitement. The bucket seats filled fast, and the crowd was buzzing, when Hardrock took to the pitch, the energy was palpable. I felt like I was part of something special. The facilities there are top-notch with food, drinks, and views that make you want to bring the whole family.”

While football took centre stage, vendors and small businesses also enjoyed brisk trade, with spectators queuing at stalls outside the venue. Inside, the shops bustled with activity as fans stocked up on merchandise and refreshments.

For many, the experience was eye opening. “I’ve never seen anything like it, I always watch European football on television with my kids and husband,” said Sarah Moyo, a local resident. “The stadium is beautiful, and the match was thrilling. I’m so glad I came with my family and experienced live what I usually see on TV.”

As the top billing match came to an end, one sentiment was unanimous: Chahwanda Stadium is a resounding success. With its pristine pitch, excellent facilities, and vibrant atmosphere, the venue has set a new benchmark for football infrastructure in Zimbabwe.
