MDC Alliance leader, Nelson Chamisa, was yesterday chided for trying to use the attacks on foreigners of African descent in South Africa to score cheap political points.
Posting on microblogging site Twitter yesterday morning, Mr Chamisa tried to create a false impression that the xenophobia was only targeted at Zimbabweans living in South Africa and went on to call for South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to “help facilitate dialogue” in Zimbabwe.
This was an attempt by Mr Chamisa to revive his claims that he won the 2018 presidential elections despite the dismissal of his appeal of the poll results by the Supreme Court.
“Extremely disturbed by violence and xenophobic attacks in South Africa. Decisive action to protect all in South Africa and stopping any attacks on fellow Africans is key. Fixing the Zimbabwean crisis is a priority. President @CyrilRamaphosa help Zimbabweans to help themselves,” posted Mr Chamisa who is smarting from failed attempts to unleash violent demonstrations across the country with the objective of effecting illegal regime change.
Asked to explain how he wanted President Ramaphosa to “help Zimbabweans help themselves,” Mr Chamisa said, “By helping Zimbabweans to peacefully resolve political disputes, differences and national questions through credible national dialogue in Zimbabwe. The legitimacy and governance crisis must be fixed. African solutions to African problems. African answers to all African questions.”
Zimbabweans then berated Mr Chamisa for trying to involve himself on an issue broader than his claim to power.
“…you shouldn’t always involve your politics in a crisis where lives are being lost,” said Zanu-PF youth league deputy secretary, Cde Lewis Matutu.
Another Twitter user by the name Matigari reminded Mr Chamisa that it is actually his party that was celebrating sanctions against Zimbabwe.
“Next time stop begging for sanctions to create a crisis. Stop going around foreign embassies praising sanctions and asking for military intervention. It’s unpatriotic. Never invite such abominations on our people,” said Matigari.
Another Twitter user Munyaradzi Brian Manyika echoed similar sentiments saying, “As if you don’t know the real problem in Zim, the problem that has given your political career life, the suffering of the masses that you draw strength from, why don’t we hear you condemning sanctions????”
A cornered Mr Chamisa tried to counter saying, “I condemn and fight human rights abuses, bad governance and dictatorship everyday and everywhere. To me these constitute the worst form of sanctions against innocent and peace-loving citizens of Zimbabwe. God bless Zimbabwe!”
He was quickly reminded by a Twitter user with the handle Vene Venyika of how he ascended to the helm of his party following the death of founding leader, Mr Morgan Tsvangirai. “How did you initially ascended to MDC leadership, was that Democratic, you can only fool your die hard fanatics,” Vene Venyika told Mr Chamisa.
Mr Chamisa was told by another Twitter user Musa Kasamba that the xenophobic issue was not a matter to use in pursuit of a selfish agenda.
“What is happening in SA is bad and its not even a platform to campaign for (your) own selfish agenda; for you cannot even rescue us from the situation we are in-Rather go back to your western handlers & let them undo the sanctions @MDCAllianceZW sought since its formation,” said Kasamba.
Ngonidzashe Meki also weighed in saying, “We all condemn xenophobia but Zimbabwe crisis is your doing caused by your greed for power. If you’re serious about this country, help us first by accepting that you lost the elections simple!”
