FRELIMO leader Mr Daniel Chapo was yesterday sworn in as Mozambique’s President at a ceremony attended by Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, who was representing Sadc chairman President Mnangagwa.
The ceremony was also attended by numerous leaders from the SADC region.
President Chapo (47) is Mozambique’s fifth president since gaining independence from Portugal in 1975.
He won the elections held on October 9 last year, securing over 65 percent of the vote against his closest challenger, Mr Venâncio Mondlane, who received 24 percent.
In his address to over 2 500 guests, President Chapo vowed to “devote my energies to defending, promoting and consolidating national unity, human rights, democracy and the well-being of the Mozambican people.”
“Together, united, we can work to develop our country and ensure a brighter future for all Mozambicans.”
He emphasised the need to restore “patriotism and pride in being Mozambican,” adding that “Mozambique cannot remain a hostage to corruption, nepotism and incompetence.”
President Chapo also committed to propelling Mozambique’s economy through robust strategies aimed at unlocking the country’s vast resources, including natural gas, oil, agriculture, and minerals.
Zimbabwe and Mozambique share a long-standing relationship that dates back to the liberation struggle, with Mozambique providing crucial support and bases for freedom fighters, often putting its citizens at risk.
